Indigenous African Vegetables
AgriSmart Zambia implements various educational and support programmes to assist small holder farmers through promoting the cultivation of African Indigenous Vegetables in Zambia. These include Bondwe (Amaranth), Kalembula (sweet potato leaves), Chibwabwa (pumpkin leaves), Lumanda (Hibiscus Sadbiriffa), Nightshade (Solanum), Spider Plant (Cleome gynandra), Katapa (casava leaves) and Delele (okra). These crops are simple to produce, highly nutritious and popular on local Zambian markets.
This project forms part of the Rutgers State University funded project titled: “Improving Nutrition and Income of Smallholder Farmers in Eastern Africa Using a Market Driven Approach to Enhance Value Chain Production of African Indigenous Vegetables.”
